Internship

Hi.

Geez I haven't write for so long. The last post was on April, now it's already September. Well, I was somehow busy and distracted. Whatever, I'm just lazy. Miheee.

I just finished my internship about a week ago. Yeay!

Some must have been curious of the fact that I went for internship in Indonesia. "Why go so far for internship?" Yup, that was what most of them said to me when they know about it.

I seriously didn't plan to have my internship oversea at all. I just got the opportunity, so I just grabbed it blindly at that time. I didn't put so much thinking into it. As soon as I knew that there are spots left for the internship, I just texted my lecturer and asked her about it. At first, I really just decided for it because I haven't got any place to do my internship. I have been planning to do my internship at Inno Bio. The place was so close to my home. But I've sent them emails and calls and there was really no good response coming from them.

Some of my friends have already got their place so I don't want to be the only person who don't. Even though at that moment they were many who haven't got them yet, but still I just don't want to be insecure. Getting an internship placement was no easy job. So when I knew that the internship in Indonesia was so easy to get, because we were just need to pass 3 point something to be qualify for the placement and bam! I got a placement!

It was actually a student exchange program collaboration with Universitas Sriwijaya (Unsri). So they sent their students here, while UTM sent their student there.

I was informed that we were going to do some lab research thingy. It was such a blur at that time. I just don't know how I was so convinced back then. Haha. My mom was so hard to let me go. But I was so strict with my decision so she lets me anyway.

Only a day before our departure to Palembang, Indonesia that we were told that they (Unsri) got us a placement at a cement factory. Oh you bet I was so shocked at that time, but I played it cool. Haha. I wasn't really putting any expectations or high hope or anything so it was easy to accept. My mom was getting worried when she knew we were gonna have the internship in a cement factory. Yeah all the dust and everything.

But believe me it wasn't that bad at all.

I was really really glad that I took the chance to come here (Indonesia). Ok so it wasn't anything luxurious or fancy about the place it was far from that to be honest. The cement factory was located in Baturaja, it was about idk 5 hours journey by car/van from the city of Palembang. And the road was so challenging. Haha. It was no big city at all. They just have one shopping centre, something like Billion or Warta.

I made it sounds so bad didn't I? Haha.

Seriously it wasn't. Of course it was a little hard but it was nothing we couldn't managed. It was fun and challenging.

What I realized about the internship in Indonesia was that it was different than the internship concept that we have in Malaysia. Although I have never had an internship here, of course, but I've heard of my sister's and seniors' experiences about it. Internship in Indonesia was more like studying. Idk if that is a great way to explain the real situation. But let me tell you what I did during my internship.

Firstly we were introduced to all of the departments. Oh and one thing, I was really surprised when I knew that all eight of us are placed in the factory. Because I don't think any of the company in Malaysia would accept that much interns at one time.

We were brought to the sites to see the manufacturing process of the cement. They were giving out handbooks, manual and flowsheet for us to really grasp the real process of cement manufacturing and some of the important theory behind all that processes. Basically we learnt from the preparation of raw material to the packaging of the cement. See, just learning, no real work. No, they didn't ask us to carry the cement sack on our back. Just sitting in our workplace and read the material they gave us and do our own research.

There was once when we have to go to the site and climbed the Production 1 Unit. It was 50 metres above the sea level dude! How cool was that, and scary. Yup. The place was so hot because there were preheaters and the fact that it was so high made it a lot scarier. But we lived. Hee.

Then we were assigned to do a presentation on our specified production unit. So basically we were just going to the factory at 7.30 in the morning everyday just to prepare for our presentation. Yep.

The engineers and workers there were so helpful. They don't mind spending their time to bring us to the site and answering our questions at all. They even helped us by giving reference material and data. All of them were so friendly and helpful.

Once the presentation was done, we were assigned to a case study. Solve the case study and get a report done.

So you see now how it was different than in Malaysia.

In Indonesia, maybe in other countries too idk, have this thing called Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which is lacking in Malaysia. This CSR thing (google it yourself) is what makes the company obliged to contribute for social good. Which is why the cement factory was so welcoming of students who want to do their internship there. The connection between the Unsri alumni who worked at the cement factory was also so strong that it helped a lot in this program.

I have finished telling you about my internship but I haven't even once mentioned the name of the company. Hehe. It was PT Semen Baturaja (Persero) Tbk.

My faculty will definitely have this kind of internship program in the future and I hope it will went well and be better than this.

I can say that I enjoyed my stay in Palembang, the people were so friendly and welcoming. They were really a warm host.

Wow I wrote a lot already. Hehe. Okay done with the internship talk.

I am so excited to get back to UTM. I missed my friends so much!

I know getting back there only meant classes and more assignment and studying hard since it will be my last year after all, but nonetheless I'm so excited to meet my friends back.

My flight is on the next Tuesday. Ooo can't wait! I've already started to pack my clothes. Hihi. There is a few days left at home so I'm gonna make full use to it by watching and downloading all drama that I want! Muahaha. Yes, because nothing can beat the luxury of wifi at my home. I hope my hostel room gets clear wifi signal. Pretty please!

Oh, I wasn't supposed to be back in Malaysia this early. But since we have already finished our internship at the factory so there isn't anything left to do in Palembang. Might as well come back early kan. It was such a blessed coincidence that AirAsia rescheduled our ticket so we are given option to reschedule the ticket back if we are not satisfy with the new flight time. We were so lucky!

Other lecturers shouldn't know this, so shhh. Keep the secret kay. ;) Haha.

Oh how I miss writing. See you in my next post. Bye~
